Tama Shimabukuro is a 15-year-old pickleball prodigy from Honolulu, Hawaii, who learned the sport by "messing around" in his driveway with a cheap Target net. Nicknamed "The Kid," Shimabukuro had zero racquet sports experience when his family discovered pickleball during a 2023 skateboarding trip to California. Before that, he was a sponsored skateboarder and surfer with Nike and RVCA deals, traveling the country for competitions before he was 13. He won his first local tournament months after picking up a paddle, debuted on the mainland in Texas in November 2023, and entered his first PPA event in Los Cabos by April 2024. He signed a three-year UPA contract in September 2025 and is sponsored by Selkirk.

What makes Shimabukuro special is his completely self-taught, freestyle approach to the game. His mom Tatum deliberately keeps him away from formal coaching because she believes it would "stifle his creativity," and honestly, it's hard to argue with the results. His style is a blend of patient dinking and unpredictable speed-ups that comes straight from his skate and surf background, where improvisation is everything. He pushed JW Johnson to three games as a 14-year-old with no coach. Growing up in Hawaii with no local juniors at his level, he had to fly to the mainland just to find competition, and now he's competing against adults twice his age on the PPA Tour. He pushed JW Johnson to three games at 14 years old, playing with a style so unorthodox that experienced pros didn't know how to read him.

"I just love the variety of it. You can do so much on the court. You can always learn a new shot and experiment with new stuff every day. It's so much fun."
