Dennis Uspensky is a former Division I tennis standout turned professional pickleball player who became the center of one of the sport's biggest cheating scandals in 2025. During a backdraw match against Noah Torres at the PPA Virginia Beach Cup Challenger event, video footage captured Uspensky making at least four blatant false line calls, ruling balls that were clearly in as out. The viral clips showed calls so egregious that spectators began openly calling him out from the sidelines. When confronted by a fan, Uspensky responded with a homophobic slur and challenged the spectator to a fight. The incident earned him a 90-day PPA Tour suspension for egregious hooking, poor conduct, and offensive language.
Before pickleball, Uspensky had a legitimate tennis career. Originally from Atlantic Beach, New York, he was ranked in the top 54 of ITF Junior Rankings and competed in Junior Grand Slams at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. He played D1 tennis at Wake Forest from 2015 to 2017, compiling a 50-16 singles record and winning the 2016 ACC Tournament MVP award before transferring to Pepperdine. He also held an ATP singles ranking as high as No. 1,021. In an interview with Zane Navratil on The Pickleball Connection podcast, Uspensky openly admitted to the cheating but showed zero remorse, saying "When I'm threatened, I retaliate" and dismissing the backlash as the sport being "very soft." The interview did little to help his case and drew widespread criticism from the pickleball community.
