Tony Sapienza, a 63-year-old recreational pickleball player from Ponce Inlet, Florida, became one of the most talked-about names in the sport after a violent altercation at Spruce Creek Country Club in Port Orange on February 8, 2026. What started as a routine doubles match escalated into a full-blown brawl involving roughly 20 people after a dispute over a kitchen violation. According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, Sapienza struck one opponent in the face, causing significant bleeding and eye swelling that required hospital treatment. He also allegedly pushed the victim's wife to the ground and punched another player who tried to intervene. His wife, Julianne Sapienza, 51, reportedly ran onto the court and punched one of the victims as well.
Both Tony and Julianne were arrested at their home after fleeing the scene. Tony was charged with two counts of felony battery on a person 65 or older and one count of aggravated battery. Julianne was charged with one count of felony battery on a person 65 or older. Tony posted $4,500 bond and Julianne posted $5,000 bond, with both scheduled for a March 3, 2026 court date. The story was picked up by NBC News, CBS, Fox 35, and numerous national outlets, turning a country club pickleball game into one of the wildest sports stories of the year. The incident has since become a cautionary tale about how heated recreational pickleball disputes can get, especially in Florida's competitive senior communities.
